This policy applies to versions of NoPad that include optional iCloud sync. NoPad 1.3 keeps buffers local and makes no sync requests. Updating the app does not enable sync automatically. Available editing and sync features depend on the installed version and platform.
Your buffers
NoPad saves buffers on your device automatically. Text detection, formatting, previews, search and comparison run locally. You can use the local editor without enabling iCloud or creating a NoPad account.
NoPad has no developer-operated account service, analytics, advertising, tracking or AI service. The app does not send your buffers to the developer.
Optional iCloud sync
Sync is off until you enable it in NoPad. Enabling it sends eligible buffer contents, names, identifiers and formatting metadata to your private CloudKit database, hosted by Apple, so compatible NoPad installations signed into the same Apple Account can access them. Formatting metadata includes encoding, delimiter/header choices, and text-block names and structure.
Apple processes this data under its iCloud terms and privacy policy. The developer cannot access your private CloudKit database through the developer console. Sync needs internet access, an iCloud account and enough iCloud storage.
Mapped files and buffers over the 14 MB limit (14 × 1,024 × 1,024 bytes) are excluded. Other validation limits can also exclude a buffer. If a previously synced buffer grows beyond the limit, its earlier cloud copy is removed while the larger local buffer is kept. Reducing it below the limit makes it eligible again.
File locations and access permissions, window layouts, cursor positions, undo history, recent files, app preferences and AI-provider consent grants stay on the device. Names and contents can contain personal information; review your library before enabling sync.
Retention and deletion
Downloaded buffers remain available offline. Edits and buffer deletions sync when devices reconnect. Conflicting edits produce separate copies so you can inspect both. Turning sync off keeps local and iCloud copies and stops further sync.
Discard a buffer while sync is enabled to remove it from the synced library. Small deletion records remain in iCloud so an offline device can learn about a deletion when it returns. A newer edit from another device can be retained instead of being erased by an older deletion.
Closing a tab does not delete its buffer. On Mac, Discard normally retains a local recovery copy for ten seconds. If restoring it fails, the copy can remain for later recovery. Local undo and recovery data are not uploaded for sync.
You can remove NoPad's iCloud data using Apple's iCloud storage controls. Reconnecting a device with existing local buffers may upload them again. Turn sync off on your devices first if you want removed cloud data to remain removed.
Files, exports and clipboard
Opening an ordinary file creates a scratch copy. Large files can be memory-mapped and read in place. Editing or discarding a scratch buffer does not overwrite its source file. Export, Copy and the system share sheet transfer only the content you choose to a destination you select. The receiving app or service has its own privacy practices. NoPad never uploads mapped source files for sync.
Device information
NoPad reads file timestamps for files you choose and for local app storage, and macOS retains the app's window settings. These uses stay on the device. NoPad does not collect identifiers, location, contacts, browsing history or usage events for the developer and does not track you across apps or websites.
